Solar Power Output
There is no one size fits all approach!
At ERG, we are Preston’s leading solar panel experts. We install PV solar panels, solar power storage systems and additional extras in homes and businesses across the North West. So when it comes to solar power output, we have all the facts.
Every solar panel system installed on different properties is different. So unfortunately, there is no one size fits all approach to solar panel power output. However, we can give you a basic idea of the average power generated for domestic solar panels.
Domestic solar systems
The Energy Saving Trust have estimated that a standard 3-bedroom house in the UK would use just over 3,000 kW units in a year. As a result, a 4 kW or 5 kW system would provide your entire electricity requirement for the whole year.
However, the Government’s Feed-in Tariff pays the highest rates for systems that are smaller than 4 kW.
In general, a domestic system ranges from 1 kilowatt (kW) to 5 kW in size. The power they produce will vary but generally:
1 kW System
A 1 kW system produces around 850 kW units per year.
2 kW System
A 2 kW system would create around 1,700 kW units per year
3 kW System
A 5 kW system would produce around 4,500 kW units.

Produce enough energy for a family sized home.
In general, a standard 3 kW to 4 kW solar panel system will produce enough energy for a family sized home, while a 2 kW to 3 kW will be the right size for a smaller household.

An average 4 kW solar panel system will produce around 3,400 kWh of free electricity a year. That’s enough electricity to individually power:
- The washing machine for 4,857 hours
- The fridge for 97,143 hours
- The kettle for 1,880 hours
- The oven for 1,417 hours of the oven
